The Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist papers, 1840-1988 and undated, primarily documents the personal and professional life of the second president of Augustana College, Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist. Hasselquist was born in Sweden in 1816 and traveled to America in 1852. Before assuming the presidency of the college in 1863, Hasselquist was the president of the Augustana Synod, the editor of a Swedish-language newspaper, and a pastor. Abstract
The Jenny Lind Chapel was the first house of worship built by and for a Swedish Lutheran congregation in Andover, Illinois. Pastor Lars Esbjörn and ten Swedish settlers founded the congregation in the fall of 1850. The chapel still stands and holds services as of 2016. Josua Lindahl was a professor of natural science and mathematics at Augustana College and Theological Seminary in Rock Island, Illinois, from 1878 to 1888. Lindahl is remembered as the first full time science teacher at Augustana College and laid the foundation for his successor, John Udden, a later professor of geology. K. A. Martin (also, Karl Axel or Carl Axel) was born in Horn, Östergötland, Sweden on January 22, 1863. He came to the United States in 1881, and arrived at Augustana College and Theological Seminary in Rock Island, Illinois in 1884. He attended the college from 1886-1888, and the seminary from 1892-1894. Martin was ordained in St. Peter, Minnesota on June 10, 1894.
